Kevin Shepherd

I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) with over 10 years of experience in the social services field. I’ve worked in residential youth centers, community outpatient agencies, and private practice.

I am experienced in working with people with a variety of challenges and mental health concerns, including challenges and stress related to adjustment and life transitions, depression, and anxiety disorders. A lot of my experience has centered around assisting undergraduate and graduate students deal with their unique stressors in their challenging academic programs, as well as educators and other young professionals in the community. I also have gained expertise in assisting LGBTQ client's navigate the psychosocial stressors in coming out, especially gay men wrestling with the challenges associated with spirituality and mental health.

Therapy looks different for everyone. I tend to draw from concepts from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to assist clients in gaining insight and helping decrease the severity of mental health symptoms. However, I believe therapy should largely center around the relationship and connection between the client and therapist: I want the therapeutic environment to feel approachable and relaxed, often utilizing humor to assist the client in feeling comfortable in the therapeutic process and making gains in their mental health goals.

Kevin practices at our Downtown Champaign location.
