If you’re covered by Medicare and looking for a therapist, you’ve already cleared one of the bigger hurdles. Medicare covers outpatient mental health services, and Keri Powell Therapy is in-network. That means you can use your benefits here without jumping through extra hoops to make it work.
We have locations in Champaign, Mahomet, Monticello, Bloomington, and Oak Brook, and we also see clients throughout Illinois via telehealth. If getting to an office is a barrier, that’s a real option, not an afterthought.
What Medicare Covers for Therapy
Medicare Part B covers outpatient mental health care, including individual therapy, family therapy, and group therapy sessions. After you meet your Part B deductible, Medicare typically covers 80 percent of the approved amount. You’re responsible for the remaining 20 percent, which is where a Medicare supplement plan (Medigap) can reduce your out-of-pocket costs further.
A few things worth knowing:
- You don’t need a referral from your primary care physician to start therapy under Medicare.
- Medicare Advantage plans (Part C) vary. If you’re on a Medicare Advantage plan rather than Original Medicare, we’ll verify your specific benefits before your first appointment.
- Telehealth visits are covered under Medicare. Under current Medicare guidelines, an in-person session is not required before starting telehealth care, making it possible to see a therapist entirely from home. This policy is in effect through December 31, 2026.
What to Expect When You Reach Out
When you contact us, we’ll ask for your Medicare information and verify your coverage before your first session. We handle that process on our end so you’re not left guessing about cost.
From there, we’ll match you with a therapist based on what you’re dealing with, your schedule, and your location preferences. We have therapists who work with anxiety, depression, grief, trauma, relationship concerns, and more. The goal is a good fit, not just an available slot.
Your first session is about getting to know each other. You’re not locked in, and there’s no pressure to commit to a long-term plan before you’ve had a chance to see how it feels.
