Finding a therapist who accepts Tricare can take longer than it should. Provider directories aren’t always current, and not every practice that lists Tricare is actively accepting new clients under it. At Keri Powell Therapy, we accept Tricare and we’re ready to see you.
We work with active duty service members, veterans, military families, and dependents. Mental health care for this population isn’t a specialty we added on. It’s something our therapists take seriously and approach with the context it deserves.
We have offices in Champaign, downtown Champaign, Mahomet, Monticello, Bloomington, and Oak Brook, and we offer telehealth across Illinois. If you’re not near one of our locations, telehealth is a full option, not a workaround.
What Tricare Covers for Mental Health
Tricare covers outpatient mental health services, including individual therapy. What you pay out of pocket depends on which Tricare plan you have and whether you’re seen at a Tricare-authorized provider. A few things worth understanding before your first appointment:
- Tricare Prime generally requires a referral from your primary care manager (PCM) before you can see a mental health provider. If you haven’t gotten one yet, that’s where to start.
- Tricare Select does not require a referral for mental health services. You can contact us directly and schedule.
- Tricare for Life, which covers Medicare-eligible retirees, works alongside Medicare as a secondary payer. We accept both.
- Telehealth is covered under Tricare. If seeing someone in person isn’t practical, virtual appointments are a covered option.
If you’re not sure which plan you have or whether a referral applies to you, we can help you figure that out when you reach out.
What to Expect When You Reach Out
When you contact us, we’ll ask for your Tricare information and verify your coverage. If your plan requires a referral, we’ll let you know before scheduling so there are no surprises.
From there, we’ll match you with a therapist based on what you’re working through, your schedule, and your location. We see clients dealing with anxiety, depression, PTSD, trauma, grief, relationship strain, and more. We don’t assume that a military background means the same thing for everyone. Your therapist will take the time to understand your specific situation.
Your first session is about getting to know each other. No pressure, no long-term commitment required before you’ve had a chance to see how it feels.

Yes. Tricare covers telehealth mental health services. We offer virtual appointments to clients anywhere in Illinois. You can meet with a therapist by video from home, which is particularly useful if you’re located away from our physical offices.
Tricare for Life is a Medicare wraparound plan available to Medicare-eligible military retirees. It covers costs that Medicare doesn’t fully pay. We accept both Medicare and Tricare for Life, so if you’re covered under both, we can work with that combination.
